LOONG YUEN | HONG KONG

I haven't tried a lot of Chinese/Cantonese restaurants since I came to Hong Kong, while in the limited ticked list, Loong Yuen, is one of the recommended list. The impression of this restaurant to me, is everything about quality and humble. The restaurant is located in the basement floor of Holiday Inn in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is a hot spot but not adding too much benefits to the restaurant for its hidden location. The visitors there are half tourists half locals, who are mostly re-visitors for its stable quality. The Chinese dishes served there were in a reasonable price range, and the design of the dishes were in generally, traditional, but sometimes they are twisted with a little new concept by adopting the western cooking concept.

KAM KEE CAFE | HONG KONG

Traditional old Hongkong-style Cafe reopened in Sai Wan, is attracting a group of people who are always running after the classic and qualified dining place. I love the old poster hanging there, 20/30's fashion is saying a lot of that-year stories, which are absolutely fantastic to the young generation like us. Actually, our grand-generation could have more romantic than us :D

EAT IN HK | HONG KONG

Before I continue my normal restaurant review, I want to write some simple words about my real food journey in my every day-time. Not sure I am lucky or not to have my new office location at one of the most local district of Hong Kong, where when you have a random walk there, you are every-second rounded by the very Hong Kong locals, with slippers and pajama (not much this extreme situation), VERY not patient and always loud. Wait!!! Looks quite negative description? half yes, half nope, actually it is Hong Kong, the real one, and I do appreciate those neighbors who are maybe not that rich or educated, but they are real persons, and they deliver good stuff by their heart!

That's why those areas, in general, have the highest density of good local restaurants.

HEE KEE CRAB GENERAL | HONG KONG

Canal Road (underneath the bridge), is an iconic place in Hong Kong, and that night I went there for my first experience of 'Chili Crab underneath the bridge' in Hee Kee Crab General, which is one of the oldest and the most famous Chili Crab restaurant. I have not been to other chili crab restaurants in the same area while this one gives me a good impression by its clean and cheerful dining environment once I step into it (actually the restaurant is at the basement). To me, tiny and clean is the first and probably the most important condition when I judge a Chinese restaurant, because I know most of Chinese dishes go through a complicated cooking process including a lot oil, sauces and other materials, which is much more easier to get everywhere a mass comparing to the western ones. Thus, I take the dining environment very seriously.

NAM LOONG CAFE | HONG KONG

Memory is one of the most precious asset for human beings. For Hongkongers who's used to a wide diversity of dining culture since early times, the Hong Kong Tea Restaurant, is undoubtedly on the memorable list. The green metal railings, the white ceramics, the efficient-working staffs... each part forms up the idea of 'Tea Restaurant' where is the dream-creator of most Hongkongers.

Years going, the old-style restaurant is fading away for many reasons, but luckily, fading-away memory creates more opportunities for those who care a lot and who can twist it with more value. Nam Loong, managed by Golden Stone Catering Group, is another story of modern-traditional Tea Restaurant.

Ser Wong Fun 蛇王芬

Chinese cuisine lives without season flavors, especially chili season, when we have so many festivals, the seasonal signature foods never stop. In Central, under famous western dining block (Soho), Ser Wong Fun attracts both travelers and locals. It's a traditional Cantonese restaurant, running for quite long time, and now is in charged by the third generation. By reading its Chinese name, what's you should order there is too obvious - Snake Soup.

Hing Kee Restaurant 興記菜館

Yummy Casserole (rice) is one of the signature food in Hong Kong, especially for winter season. Those raw rice just is getting well cooked by the heated casserole. The normal-looking cook stuff has a magical power to make those rice good-smelling and chewy, and I'm sure some of you just like me, prefer those bottom layer of rice stick on the casserole, a little over-cooked but extremely tasty even without any sauce.

Yau Ma Tei, the must-going place for travelers and also for locals in chili seasons. The Hong Kong style street foods and local restaurants there offers super cheap seafood, fried foods, casserole and Chinese desserts. Hing Kee, has quite huge business, almost cover the whole bottom area of the whole street. Eaters prefer sitting outdoor and enjoying really local foods and services. Everything is noisy and loud, typically street-style.

Loong Toh Yuen 隆濤院

Loong Toh Yuen, hidden in Hullett House, 1881 Heritage, in Tsim Sha Tsui. A re-packaged Chinese-Cantonese restaurant serves traditional Cantonese All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum Delight during lunch time, 7 days. It really costs some time for me to find this restaurant, to be honest, I just go around over 3 times, trying to locate it by Google Map and myself without disturbing others. Failed, finally, I went across the long dark lane, reached the backyard (quite Beijing old building style, Si-He-Yuan), pointed by restaurant staff by recognizing my searching-something face, and find the door.

Of course, not-easy journey didn't bother my sense on those details. I love the simple design of the whole building, meanwhile decorated with a lot Chinese elements, bamboo, water and peony (or camellia? I'm absolutely not familiar to flowers, anyone pls correct me). Full white painted wall is decorated by only one tiny corner of Chinese painting flower or bamboo bird cage - a little Zen.

百樂潮州酒樓 Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant

It has been over 2 years since my parents came to Hong Kong last time; that is my start in HK, and this time is kinda end of student life in HK. Before sending parents back home, how can I let them miss the precious chance to experience Chiu Chow cuisine? For who want to taste as more as possible but have limited stomach, Pak Loh in Mongkok East offers a tasting menu including Chile red wine, Chiu Chow Gongfu Tea, appetizer, soup, main-course and dessert.

SUMMER DIM SUM AND DISHES

Thanks to PR friend’s invitation to Dim Sum Bar, where I go for twice within 2 weeks unexpectedly. (Want to read last experience there? Click HERE!) As bloggers invited that day, we are all excited to the new menu and dishes for this summer. Rush to the restaurant once off-work, I still become the last one without any doubt… Anyway, order one iced lemon tea before ‘feast’; I really need to cool down!
