Good? Bad? Afternoon tea, highly depends on the place where you have it. In Shanghai, I’m pretty sure you have a hand of good choices no matter you are a Bund View fan, or old Shanghai taste of French Concession Area. Well, I’m over-expected the High-tea experience along the Bund, enjoying the rooftop terrace and star-labeled restaurant service. Those little cafés pleased me a lot in adverse.
SinMei Tea 川善居
35 Shao Xing Lu, Xujiahui, Shanghai
上海徐家匯紹興路35號(近陝西南路)
Tel. +86 136 5178 4392
Located in Rui Jin Hotel Area (瑞金賓館區) which attracts a lot of stylish cafés by its charming old-Shanghai feel. My favorite seat is in the open terrace of SinMei Tea where you can have a glimpse of traditional Shanghainese life. The greentea fountain and greentea hot/cold drinks are the signature items and follow the lightest concept for a fresh and natural taste.

Café shop on Yong Kang Lu, imported coffee beans, blended in Shanghai, and offers smashed coffee powder in bottle or paper bag package. Limited special coffee is offered depends on shop’s supply. Nice guy and owner who are always willing to share their love to coffee with you. Like most of shops on Yong Kang Lu, they also serve simple pasta/sandwiches/rice; shisha and imported craft beer with Italian brands, and normal wines in a good price.
Whisk

A quite private and easytalk place, but also offer simple western dinner with standard wine menu at night. It has been quite some years since this shop is known by the public as its authentic chocolate drink/dessert. Look into the fridge at entrance; you will have a totally dark chocolate view for those mousse cake, cheesecake, mousse cup and pudding cup, to name some. That afternoon, I just dropped for a take-away drink, of course. For the heavy chocolate-fan, you better have 72% one; for sweet-teeth, maybe 62% milk chocolate is another good choice; plus, they can make cream on the top for you. 72% hot chocolate (RMB46) is in a really thick liquid texture while it’s not sticky. For the taste (in my opinion), the sweet level is 3/5, while it’s in perfect temperature and perfect after-taste of authentic chocolate liquid; definitely a recommend drink in chili/cool weather.

One of the best view points along the Bund. New Height is a modern Spanish restaurant while offers causal lounge with an open terrace. The afternoon tea for two is really a cheap deal while I don’t recommend for a try. In my view, the placement of pastries, the overall appearance, the taste and even the included drinks, all have a large space to improve. I appreciate the lounge design very much for the transparent glass ceiling allowing natural lights; I guess at night when the moonlight comes in, it would be gorgeous. However, I hate those ‘dead’ air-conditioning system, the indoor temperature is too high and the air is not good, so that I have to move from inside to outside (even you feel the same humidity and heat outside). The service, sometimes very nice and thoughtful, sometimes as given by a non-trained person; you gonna try your luck :D
