Seldom visit local restaurant, but old Hongkong-sytly cafe is always the attraction to me, and I never get boring to try new ones. MATCH BOX, based in Causeway Bay (CWB), two branches locates in non-crowded area, features the old-style cafe decoration and menu. Even not a local Hongkonger, I also found some similar childhood memory there, but quite sure it's the popular little tricks enjoyed by older generation. I love the old but stylish windows of the restaurant, bring you go through the time tunnel to enjoy a stylish Hongkonger's dinner at that time. Menu follows normal traditional Cantonese restaurant/cafe's but with new inputs, which are all highlighted as famous/must-try items. Price is, undoubtedly, higher than local ones, but to pay for a old stylish dining experience, acceptable and reasonable.

極少光顧中餐廳的我對於香港的茶餐廳或是冰室卻是樂此不疲,一直想去試試以懷舊著名的喜喜冰室,這晚終於有了機會。喜喜冰室兩家分店都在銅鑼灣,不過地理位置就偏了些,成功避開遊客集中區,所以夜晚到的時候也不用排隊,就餐環境與服務也相當緩和、放鬆,不似茶餐廳那般催促,也不似出了名的餐廳那般傲慢。很喜歡餐廳的大門和外景,不是一味的懷舊,而是盡顯那個年代的冰室的風光與格調,讓人有種穿越時光機做一回“老克勒”(上海土話,現代翻譯差不多指有一定年紀但分度不減且更顯成熟與型格的男士)的感覺。一般冰室有的喜喜基本都有,但喜喜也有些新穎的菜色,融入西方飲食的元素,將老香港的傳統小食“發揚光大”。價格方面當然會比一般冰室貴一些,但平衡考慮如此環境,可接受度還是相當高的。

OVALTINE & HORLICK

It's interesting coz I didnt get the solid idea when looking into the drink menu, but I would like to try, and the result is nice! It's a mixed hot sweet drink with Ovaltine and Horlick, decorated with a big marshmallow. It's not too sweet but you can taste both brands in the same sip.

Compared to other dishes, this special set is really in a competitive price! The big potion can be shared by two, and with a balance taste of savory one & sweet dish. Chicken pie is traditional local pastry, with butter-rich layers and chicken & beans as fillings. With green bean cream soup, which is not-too-creamy. It adds new concept to the dish, beautiful looking & good pairing of soup and pie. Worth to try! The banana pancake with syrup, condensed milk, walnut and caramel sauce is good. The fluffy pancake is like the sponge, absorbing the syrup, condense milk and caramel sauce; decorated with banana slides and walnut, it's not only yummy dessert but also rich meal.

PANCAKE WITH PINEAPPLE, HAM, HONEY SYRUP & BBQ SAUCE

It's a interesting result from the 'lab'; just imagine to mix all impossible into possible. Top layer is fresh sunny egg, love the liquid-texture yolk for sure. 2nd layer, cheddar cheese, it's normal product, but everyone likes it right?! 3rd layer, grilled pineapple, big and thick slice, juicy and sweet not only of its original taste but the syrup. 4th layer, ham, it's different from the normal one, tastes more meaty and 'authentic'. Last one, fluffy pancake sipped in the BBQ sauce, salty in large, BBQ sweet in little.



黑白多士
BLACK & WHITE TOAST (BLACK SESAME AND CONDENSED MILK SAUCE)

Crispy and fluffy toast with condense milk is not unfamiliar to most of Hongkongers. How about adding extra paste of black sesame sauce with a 'cute' name? I don't know why when I encounter "黑白多士", the word 'Knight' just popped up in my brain :P

It's rich in mouth with doubled sweetness.

CHEESE BURGER WITH FRIED EGGS


This dish is recommended by one of my blogger friends (HK Epicurus) and his comment is 'good deal'. I shall give a higher comment then, for it's fluffy bread, well-done fried eggs, lovely cheese and rich salad sauce, plus the main role - minced beef, typical Hongkong-style hamburger, but with a presentation and potion closer to the 'real' burger. My friends quite like the sweet-taste minced beef, I guess they made it with some BBQ sauce or other sweet ingredients; while to me, I'm not used to the over-soft texture of meat (beef/pork/lamp), which to me, stands for 'fake', that's why I don't like Mincing LOL.

OLD-STYLE FRIED CHICKEN LEG WITH FRUIT SALAD

OK, we have big stomach, last dish is quite Hongkonger afternoon tea style (luckily we choose fruit salad instead of fried rice as side dish). Chicken leg is deep fried, quite good quality with less oil and crispy chicken skin. It's just my style. The fruit salad is not too creamy and not with too much water, taste fresh cool.



For sure, I'll go for MATCH BOX again to explore and experience their other dishes soon!
