Korean food follows the popular trend of K-pop, slowly occupies the Hong Kong food market. Compared to Japanese food, it has the similarity of cold-cut & fresh, while it can satisfy our desire to spicy hot. That night we went to the quiet and little corner of Mongkok, Pak Po Street, and our target is Korean chicken in a non-fried way!
Overall this Korean restaurant is featured by a young Korean culture, which is quite welcomed by young generation. The large space also offers a chance for group gathering or some private party, of course, with their Soju/beer. A lot of familiar Korean dishes are offered, while some are made by imported Korean ingredients and materials. And the average cost of $150/head (without drink) is quite reasonable nowadays.
It is a two-floor restaurant, with a large group-dining room. The decoration caters the young Korean culture with those cute chicken-head-shape pad, and interesting fake window. To dine in this space is pretty like in a real back-street of Seoul. The owner brings not only Korean ingredients and taste, but also their drinks with cute packaging. Jinro ($68/360ml) is brand of Korean Soju, has a sweeter taste which is easier to drink for most of people. The Japanese-brand beer, Ashai ($38/Large Bottle) is offered too.
Kimchi $28
Tomato Salad with Parma Ham
The authentic Kimchi imported from Korea, tastes freshly cold and juicy, while has a very strong and perfect balance of sweet and spicy, to beat your tongue first then smooth it. I just finish almost the whole dish.
While the new tomato salad is kind of weird. It's just local ingredients even they are fresh while the taste is not outstanding enough. I think the parma ham is in a good quality, but it seems not a Korean style.
Grilled Pork in Lettuce Buns $68
Yummy dish, with the same concept of Southeast lettuce dishes, makes the strong conflict of juicy, fresh vegetable and greasy, heavy meat. Plus the dressing of heavy-taste Kimchi, it is very rich in flavor, and make you feel light enough to have second bite.
Spicy Andong Chicken with Oyster $178/Half or $258/Full
That night's main player looks like a plate of curry, with a rich combination of seafood (oyster), landfood (chicken) and vegetables (carrot, potato, cucumber, tapioca/potato noodle). Every ingredient absorbs the sauce in a very deep way, and those vegetables are cooked to be nearly melted. And so do the chicken and oyster. I love the onion-sweet inside the sauce which strengthen the overall flavor. The overall spicy level can be decided as 4 levels, while I do think even the hottest level won't be too spicy.
Steamed Pork with Spicy Garlic Sauce $58
A similar dish to Shanghai's steamed lamb with sweet soy sauce, this one is not an first-eye catcher, while it is worth to recommend. After steaming process, the fat is taken out from the pork and the purely white pork just preserves the best protein and the softest texture. Spicy Garlic Sauce is a salty version of Kimchi sauce, and take it with pork and raw onion slices, I can feel the pork slowly melted in the mouth.
Cheese Dumplings (new)
Beef Burger Meat /Minced beef (new)
Fish Ball Pot (new)
The fish ball pot tastes quite attractive for the heavy-flavored Kimchi sauce and sweet triangle fish balls.
