The dining business in Wanchai is booming. In those hidden lanes, there locates interesting and new concept to feed your stomach and mind. Inspired from Taiwanese 'Gua Bao' (steamed bun), BAOWOW is a casual style restaurant. It is a cool place but more expat-feeling, for those looking for small bites. The semi-open buns are kept in the steamed bamboo basket, and you have a rich flavor list served freshly by cooks. Japanese imported beers and Taiwanese sweet beer is the must try items. Well, farther than cute buns, a variety of fried snacks are offered as well.

Modern but simple restaurant offers limited dining space which creates a fast-food restaurant atmosphere, while you will find a line of little neon USB on the long bench table, providing long stay by the free electricity supply.

Thai Fish Fillet (Back), Teriyak Tofu (Front-left), Sesame Ginger Porkchop (Front-right)

Kimchi Bulgogi (Left), Pangpang Chicken (Middle), Original Gua Bao (Right)
Takoyaki Sausage Bao

The creative flavors, mostly belong to Asian cuisines including Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai. Sides (snacks) are fries mainly, and two sweets provided in a 'Two Baos' combo set in a fixed price ($68 for Two Baos with same flavor, and one beverage, extra $12-$22 for fries, onion rings or salad).

For big group, the best choice might be Bao Platter with 6 baos in different flavors. Among all the flavors we tried that night (including the new seasonal flavor), we appreciate the Original Gua Bao most. It's the similarity of Shanghainese sweet pork meat, in a way of honey sweet and heavy soy sauce dressing; it is rich in taste with crushed peanuts and cilantro. Rank 2, would be Thai Fish Fillet, which I love its mouth-inspiring sauce.

As my experience, their steamed bun has quite good quality. Perfect ratio of flour and water forms up the fluffy and soft bun; it is well kept during steaming process to be dry on the surface; and there is a slightly sweet after-taste when you are chewing the buns slowly. To be pointed out only, is the temperature of buns, which really needs you to take it immediately, otherwise it turns cold and hard with more humidity soon.

Taro Fries with Sriracha Mayo $22
Kimchili Cheese Fries $48
Bao Fries with Ovaltine Condensed Milk $28
Ice Cream Baowich (Vanilla ice cream in a fried bao) $38

Two sweets are quite creative, one with Ovaltine condensed milk, the other is like an ice-cream bun; while after both of them is quite heavy in the fried way and in the sweet level. Compared to them, I like those fries more, even they are also oily stuff. Taro Fries contains the most natural sweet and taste less greasy. Paired with beers or soft drinks, it would be the best choice for a casual night-out. Kimchili Cheese Fries, is an interesting and welcomed try. The fries are fully covered by the melted cheese and heavy seasoning Kimchi & tomato sauce; overall taste can satisfy the person who wants something can wake up his tongue.

One more tip is their sauce for fries, the DIY one, Sriracha with Mayo. If you love sour & sweet & spicy, you won't miss this one.
